Mickey Beignets

Confession.  My favorite thing to eat is anything fried and I do have a favorite section of Disneyland Park, New Orleans Square.  The rides, smells and restaurants are just the best!  It would come to no surprise that one of of our family's favorite Disney movies is "The Princess and the Frog", why, you might ask, because Tiana's a foodie like us!

If you remember, Tiana has a dream to open up her own restaurant.  She's a hard worker who is well known for her Beignets!  Beignets are a delicious, deep-fried pastry.  They are traditionally sprinkled with powdered sugar...let me tell you, they are one of my favorite treats at the Disney Parks, so good!

So I thought, how about bringing that Tiana magic home with our very own Mickey shaped Beignets!  Now, there are multiple recipes out there and one of the main ingredients is evaporated milk.  I looked in my cupboard and low and behold, no evaporated milk:(. So it was time to get creative.  After a little trial and error, I discovered that a mix of whole milk and half n' half is a great substitute for evaporated milk!

Recipe: (Adapted from I Heart Naptime)

Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3/8 cup whole milk
  • 1/8 cup half n' half
  • 3 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 TBSP shortening
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • oil, for deep frying
Instructions
  1. In a bowl of a standing mixer, combine water, sugar and yeast.  Let it sit for 10 minutes until bubbly.
  2. In another bowl, whisk egg, salt, whole milk and half n' half.  Add the milk mixture to the  yeast mixture and combine.  Add 2 cups of flour and mix to combine, then stir in the shortening.
  3. 1/4 cup at a time, add the additional flour until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.  Dough should be tacky to the touch.  Cover and let dough rise for 2 hours.
  4. Prepare oil, by bringing oil to 350ºF.  Roll our dough on floured surface and cut Mickey shapes with a cookie cutter about 1/2" thick.  Slowly drop into oil and cook for 30-60 seconds on each side.  Place on paper towels to drain grease.
  5. Let cool slightly and sprinkle with powdered sugar.  Best if served immediately. Enjoy!

The kids will love it!

I love beignets but i've always been too intimidated to try making them. Maybe now is the time.

i've never tried shortening in them so I feel like that could really be the game changer in all of this!
Thanks for this recipe, will try it next time.
We've been shaking the beignets in jello packages like pistachio and sour cherry with powered sugar and really like that!

Those look delicious. About how much oil do you need to use? It looks like maybe 3 inches from bottom on pan but hard to tell from above. Thanks. Adding these to my quarantine treat list!

Lee, I probably used more than needed. You just need enough to cook on both sides:)
